It would seem that Acts 2: 38 is one of the most
mutilated passages in present day Christendom. Many minimize or ignore the
command for baptism. Others ignore for all practical purposes the second
of the two promises made by inspiration; "and ye shall receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit." To whom was the promise given? Is the gift
the Holy Spirit per se, or is it a gift "of" in the sense of
"from" the Holy Spirit? These questions and others are the
concern of this lesson. The final lesson will also deal with these
queries to some extent.
1.
Christ and the Giving of the Holy Spirit
A.
To whom did Christ promise the
Spirit?
Lk
11: 13 "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your
children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to
them that ask him?"
Jno.
7: 37‑39 "In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus
stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and
drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his
belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit,
which they should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because
that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Jno.
14: 16,17 "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another
Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth:
whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth
him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."
B.
Did He give the Holy Spirit before "Pentecost"?
Lk.
24: 49 "And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but
tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on
high."
Jno.
7: 39 (above); Jno. 20: 22 "And when He had said this, He breathed on
them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost."
Acts
1: 8 "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come
upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all
Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
C.
What was the Spirit to do for the disciples?
John
14: 26 "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father
will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things
to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
Jno.
15: 26 "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you
from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the
Father, he shall testify of me‑."
Jno.
16: 7‑11 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient
for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come
unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come,
he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
of sin, because they believe not on me: of righteousness, because I go to
my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this
world is judged." vs. 13‑14 "Howbeit when he, the Spirit
of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not
speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak; and
he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive
of mine, and shall show it unto you."
II.

enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers
of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of
the world to come, if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto
repentance; seeing the crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and
put him to an open shame."

fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye
also are builded together for an habitation of God through the
Spirit."
